This page is about playing a video game. It is not medical, tactical, or safety advice for real life, and nothing here should be used as such.
In one line: the platoon sergeant is the platoon's most experienced NCO and its second in charge, answerable to the platoon leader for its discipline, its kit, and the welfare of its people.
What you do
- Make sure the platoon is ready: checks, inspections, and rehearsals before it steps off.
- Take the squad leaders' reports on ammunition, casualties, and equipment, and pass on what the platoon leader needs.
- Ask for resupply, and share out ammunition and supplies evenly once the platoon consolidates.
- Set up and run the casualty collection point. Direct the medic and the people carrying casualties, and keep count of the platoon's strength.
- Take charge of any element split off from the platoon.
- Put yourself where you are most needed: with the assault, or with the base of fire.
- Watch morale, discipline, and health. Uphold the standard.
- Coach the squad leaders and team leaders.
What good looks like
- The platoon leader can think about the fight, because you have everything else.
- You know the commander's intent two levels up: company and battalion.
- You could take over the platoon this minute.
What you carry
Kit
A rifle and a radio.
Who you work with
You answer to the platoon leader. The medic usually stays with you.
By the book
From ATP 3-21.8, paragraph 1-22. The manual notes that the platoon sergeant has no formal duties beyond those the platoon leader sets: the list above is what the job traditionally covers.
